2008 PresidentRemembering When the Government Was at Least ApproachableBy Dave Lindorff
We’ve come a long way towards imperial government in the US—towards
Now I know it is easy to gloss over the way things were, and since I Foreign Policy and National Security Are Not the Same ThingBy Dave Lindorff One of the sorrier legacies of eight years of Bush and Cheney in the White House has been the conflation of the terms “National Security” and “Foreign Policy” by both Republicans and Democrats. Granted that the history of US foreign policy in the world has been heavily larded with wars, many of them at America’s instigation. It is nonetheless true that foreign policy is much bigger and more far reaching than just what has come to be known as “national security” issues. In Bush-speak, national security come to mean having big guns, lots of heavily armed troops, cruise missiles, nuclear weapons, naval armadas and a bully’s willingness to use these weapons on a whim, with no thought of consequences.
Pundit of the Year: Nate SilverI frequently rail against the willfully ignorant and stupid people who call themselves "pundits" and pollute our airwaves. Today I want to do the opposite: praise a real pundit who came out of nowhere (politically speaking) and rose to the very top of the "profession." His name is Nate Silver and his website is FiveThirtyEight.com, named after the total number of Electors in the Electoral College. (If you divide by two, 269 is a tie so 270 is needed to win.) Last night, Silver made the "big time" with an appearance on Countdown with Keith Olberman. Watch the video below and you'll see why Silver is so good: he's precise, factual, thoroughly informed, practically wise, and humble.

Obama and the Insane "War" on Drugs"I'm against prison for non-violent drug offenders". A post at DU attributes that statement to Obama, presumably recently. This too: "It (prison) doesn't help them, it gives them a higher degree in criminality". If he really is still saying such sensible things on such a hot unmentionable issue, it will give me a great deal of encouragement on this and other issues as well, and on his ability to straightforwardly defend his past statements rather than running from them and looking scared and inconsistent. Somehow I doubt that was a recent statement.
Wexler for Veep?Among all the speeches before the DNC Rules & Bylaws Committee struggle, one speaker stood out: Rep. Robert Wexler (D-FL). Brad Friedman came to a surprising conclusion:
