Obama's Militarism--What to Do?
I just finished reading the latest Nation piece about Barack Obama's deep ties to the so-called "neoliberal" hawks of the Clinton era. As progressive journalists, we're wrestling with how to best leverage Obama toward more progressive policies. But his advisers scoff at the idea of downsizing the Pentagon budget, and he still sees the world through the narrow blinders of the imperial dominancy. He's trapped in the paradigm of winners and losers, supremacy or decline, that got us into this mess. I welcome the thoughts of fellow activists on how we, the progressive media, should handle Obama. So far, we've been pretty gentle.

Ask Scahill
Yes, it's time to be more aggressive. Scahill came to speak in Albuquerque and informed us of Obama's ties with the hawks of the Clinton era. If I understood him correctly, he spoke with Obama's top advisers and, due to the influence of the hawks, Obama is not going to touch the issue of Blackwater-type contracted military. Since the U.S. contracted military is not counted in the official war stats and they are not as yet held accountable for anything, I'm thoroughly disillusioned to hear that Obama is going to allow it to continue unchallenged. I had, for a while, been sipping the Obama kool-aid.
Now is the only time that Obama might listen to our voices. After the election, he won't need us.
So, yes, now is absolutely the time to be as aggressive as possible.
Influence Obama
I'm putting money in the "escrow" account, Hoping that the Obama campaign will take notice. I don't really have much faith as they seem to be getting plenty of cash now. For years I have been responding to appeals from house and senate campaign committees with "Not one dime for war whimps." Money talks, but now a days it has to be lots of money in a bundle.
Why Escrow Obama money?
I've put $200 (all I can afford) in escrow in hope of restraining Sen. Obama's shuffle to the right. The organized right didn’t get where it is by bowing down to an imaginary center. It articulated its principles, argued, propagandized, and stuck to its message. I’m tired of Democrats who follow where they think the polls are leading instead of leading until the polls follow. I support the Open Letter recently published in “The Nation” magazine, and encourage others to do so. It congratulates Sen. Obama, and calls on him to stick to the policies he originally put forward. Some key items are:
• Withdrawal from Iraq on a fixed timetable.
• A response to the current economic crisis that reduces the gap between the rich and the rest of us through a more progressive financial and welfare system; public investment to create jobs and repair the country's collapsing infrastructure; fair trade policies; restoration of the freedom to organize unions; and meaningful government enforcement of labor laws and regulation of industry.
• Universal healthcare
• An environmental policy that transforms the economy by shifting billions of dollars from the consumption of fossil fuels to alternative energy sources, creating millions of green jobs.
• An end to the regime of torture, abuse of civil liberties and unchecked executive power that has flourished in the Bush era.
