Starting an Impeachment Committee

I know this is a really Republican area, but anyone out there interested in trying to start an impeachment committee?

Sounds good to me. What do you suggest? I am definitely ready to support some local action on impeachment in whatever way I can.

Scott, I am interested, what is the plan?  Barbara Cogswell

Plan?

Hi, Barbara--

Sorry to take so long to reply. I had been checking this forum regularly, but had sort of given up on it....

Obviously, in this CD, we're not going to get Buck McKeon to change his mind about impeachment. Personally, I don't see much value to occupying his local office, although if more people got interested, maybe that could become something creative and constructive to do...

Right now, my own sense is that lobbying the public, rather than McKeon (i.e. demonstrating) is one avenue to pursue. I'd be up for getting some kind of large banner and maybe doing some freeway overapass demo, something like that.

Another possible idea is the notion of "do-it-yourself" impeachment. According to the site below, there is an obscure rule in the "Jefferson manual" that  allows an individual citizen (or citizens) to introduce a "memorial for impeachment." That might be fun to try... Here's the link:

http://impeachforpeace.org/ImpeachNow.html

Thanks for getting in touch, and do let me know what thoughts you have about doing something constructive on this. I'm still very gung ho, but even in my local dem club, there isn't much appetite for activism on impeachment, even though there is some sympathy for it.

Welcome

Welcome, Dennis!

I'd be very interested to hear your thoughts about impeachment activities you'd find valuable to do. The important thing about gathering signatures on a petition, and that sort of lobbying thing, is to engage with the public about impeachment.

Do you think setting up a table with impeachment literature, a petition and sample letters, etc. would be worthwhile? Any thoughts about where would be a good place to do that?

We would of course schedule a meeting to deliver them to McKeon's office. Congress will be in recess in August, and that would be a good time to deliver any letters, petitions, etc. we can gather by that time...

Support CA-Dem Resolution to Impeach

I don't have any specific information yet about the Impeachment Resolution just approved at the Delegate Convention in San Diego, but finding some way to support that would seem to be a good course of action. Any thoughts?

Update

I do now have the text of the resolution. Here it is:

Now SD07.53 A

(formerly MAN06.25)

CALLING FOR FULL INVESTIGATION INTO ABUSES OF POWER

BY PRESIDENT GEORGE W. BUSH AND RICHARD B. CHENEY

WHEREAS, George W. Bush and Richard B. Cheney have acted in a manner

contrary to their trust as President and Vice President, subversive of the

Constitution, to the great prejudice of the cause of law and justice, and to the

manifest injury of the people of California and the United States of America, by

intentionally disseminating and propagating knowingly false and fabricated

"evidence" regarding the threat from Iraq in order to wage a tragic, bloody war

with the loss of thousands of brave American troops and Iraqi civilians, and

WHEREAS, it is clear that since September 11, 2001, President George W. Bush

and Vice President Dick Cheney have abused their powers of office by: 1) using

information they knew to be false as justification for the U.S. invasion of Iraq; 2)

condoning and authorizing the torture of prisoners of war; 3) authorizing wiretaps

on U.S. citizens without obtaining a warrant; 4) disclosing the name of an

undercover CIA operative contrary to law in order to harm her for her husband's

opposition to the Iraq War; 5) having suspended and denied the historic Writ of

Habeus Corpus by ordering the indefinite detention of so-called enemy combatants

without charge and without access to legal counsel; and 6) overstepping

Presidential authority by signing statements used to ignore or circumvent portions

of over 750 Congressional statutes he brought into law; and

THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, that the California Democratic Party

supports vigorous investigation of these charges by the Congress of the United

States, including the full use of Congressional subpoena power authority to

completely disclose the actions of the Administration to the American people and

to take necessary action to call the Administration to account with appropriate

remedies and punishment, including impeachment.

Honk to Impeach

This sounds like a pretty easy, and effective, way to demonstrate for impeachment:

Americans celebrate July 4 as a day of patriotism, but the true spirit of July 4 has been lost. After all, July 4, 1776 was the day our Founding Fathers declared the American Revolution against King George.

So let's use this July 4 to declare our independence from King George W - and let's make some noise!

Local impeachment activists report great success holding signs at busy intersections that say "HONK TO IMPEACH!" Most of the drivers who pass these signs are delighted to honk - which makes them happy and makes our activists happy too. Best of all, the drivers and pedestrians discover how much support there is for impeachment - something they never knew because the Corporate Media won't tell them or even conduct a poll. Here's a great report from Bob Feuer of Great Barrington, Mass: http://www.afterdowningstreet.org/honktoimpeach-1

July 4 is a great day to "HONK TO IMPEACH" because there's already lots of noise from fireworks and people are relaxed. So here's our plan:

  1. Check your local community calendar for the fireworks celebration near you, and note the time and main parking location.
  2. Pick an intersection outside the entrance where all the cars will come and go. Visit that intersection if you can to see how the traffic flows and pick the safest spot to stand.
  3. Add a marker for your intersection's location to our ImpeachMap at http://www.communitywalk.com/impeach. Be sure to include the time, exact location, and your contact info in your marker description, and use the category "Honk to Impeach"
  4. Click the Share/Export link on the ImpeachMap to e-mail it to your friends, get a link to it, or embed it in your blog, website, or profile.
  5. Bring signs that say "HONK TO IMPEACH" and "Text IMPEACH to 30644" (see below) and bring extra sign paper and magic markers if more activists show up. Or make a large banner like the one in this video. Or bring the big I-M-P-E-A-C-H letters you used on A28. Bring wooden stakes and staples to make carrying easier. Bring American flags and Uncle Sam outfits to capture the July 4 spirit. Try this sign: "BE A PATRIOT: HONK TO IMPEACH CHENEY AND BUSH"
  6. Bring cameras, upload your photos/videos, and publish your reports here:
    http://www.impeachspace.com/
  7. Keep building our nationwide movement by scheduling a weekly "HONK TO IMPEACH" in front of your local media outlets and Congressional district offices, and post it to our ImpeachMap at http://www.communitywalk.com/impeach

Why hold a sign saying "Text IMPEACH to 30644"? Because we've invented a great new way to enlist more impeachment activists, especially younger people who use their cellphones for text messaging. When they text "IMPEACH" to 30644 they are prompted to enter their e-mail addresses so we can connect them with all the impeachment work we're doing, both nationally and locally. This way the HONK TO IMPEACH events will actually grow the movement.

July 4 will be the launch of the HONK TO IMPEACH movement nationwide this summer. People who have already tried it report a great deal of enthusiasm and excitement and we encourage you to make this a regular (e.g. weekly) event. If you decide to do so, please update your markers on the ImpeachMap following July 4 with whatever location and time you choose for your weekly honkathon. If you need any help, e-mail jacob@a28.org.

Educating About Impeachment - Inspiring and Informative Sources

Hi everyone,

For strong arguments in favor of impeachment, go to pbs.org and look up the "Bill Moyers Journal" program.  Click on Moyers' interview with John Nichols (liberal) and Bruce Fein (conservative)--both in favor of impeaching Bush and Cheney.  You can view the entire hour online.  Very powerful, and more relevant than ever!

Bruce Fein has founded an organization, American Freedom Agenda--a group of conservatives who are concerned about a too-powerful executive branch--which you can find online.  The organization serves to demonstrate (especially in a largely conservative community like SCV) that impeachment is an issue that crosses party lines, that transcends party loyalty, that puts the Constitution first.

Also, check out the small book, Articles of Impeachment Against George W. Bush, published by the Center for Constitutional Rights.  (2006; $9.95)

Was it Thomas Paine who said something like, "A patriot must be willing to defend his country against his president"?

Best regards!

Thanks for the resources

I saw the Moyers special, too. Bruce Fein was very impassioned and articulate, and made the point that all of us who have been advocating impeachment have been making, but should emphasize at every opportunity: the impeachment movement is not about Bush and Cheney, it's about preserving the Constitution and limiting the runaway expansion of executive powers. It's not a movement to impeach the President; it's a movement to impeach the precedent he's setting.

In that sense, it ought to be, and is, a bi-partisan issue. Thoughtful conservatives who care about the Constitution and the founding principles of the Republic should favor impeachment as much as anyone, and Bruce Fein demonstrates that eloquently.

I'm sure I don't need to recall Chuck Hagel's comment in March that if Bush keeps us in Iraq against the will of the majority of people, that impeachment is an option (his words were "Any president who says, I don't care, or I will not respond to what the people of this country are saying about Iraq or anything else, or I don't care what the Congress does, I am going to proceed ---- if a president really believes that, then there are ---- what I was pointing out, there are ways to deal with that").

And Arlen Specter said early in 2006, regarding illegal surveillance of Americans, that impeachment was possible: ""Impeachment is a remedy. After impeachment, you could have a criminal prosecution, but the principal remedy ... under our society is to pay a political price." (Most recently, on Tuesday in the Judiciary Committee Hearings with Gonzales, Specter again raised the, well, specter of impeachment for the abuse of claims of executive privilege invoked by the White House).

And of course Ron Paul has been making the rounds predicting Bush will be impeached. Former Reagan official Paul Craig Roberts has also been calling for Bush's impeachment to avoid a police state.

Of course, public opinion does break down still largely along party lines. The recent American Research Group Poll showed:

Question:
Do you favor or oppose the US House of Representatives beginning impeachment proceedings against President George W. Bush?

7/5/07 Favor Oppose Undecided

All Adults 45% 46% 9%
Voters 46% 44% 10%

Democrats (38%) 69% 22% 9%
Republicans (29%) 13% 86% 1%
Independents (33%) 50% 30% 20%

3/15/06 42% 49% 9%

Question:
Do you favor or oppose the US House of Representatives beginning impeachment proceedings against Vice President Dick Cheney?

7/5/07 Favor Oppose Undecided

All Adults 54% 40% 6%
Voters 50% 44% 6%

Democrats (38%) 76% 24% -
Republicans (29%) 17% 83% -
Independents (33%) 51% 29% 20%

I think what's significant about these results is that a majority of independents favor impeachment. That's what's really putting the overall number of all adults/voters over the top.

You can see these poll results, and others, at:

2 Impeachment bills are in the House

On July 31, Jay Inslee (R-WA-1) and 15 or 16 other Reps. introduced H.Res. 589 to the House Committee on Rules asking Rules to direct the House Judiciary Comm. to investigate whether or not Alberta Gonzalez should be impeached.  This bill currently has over 20 sponsors.  And H.Res. 333 has about 17 or 18 cosponsors.  Looks like the pro-impeach Dems are impatient with the anti-impeachment Dems and want them to get going.

Steam is gathering.  Ii is time to write our Reps. and get them to introduce legislation against Bush.

kindred spirits in Palmdale?

It was stunning to watch the Moyers program and see Nichols and Fein agree on the need for impeachment.  (Does anyone else wonder who or why Fein's website has been taken down?) I've written to the AV Press, written to Congress. I've signed petitions. But  our representatives don't appear to be listening.

What's the next step for We the People? It'll be easy to vote against McKeon since he doesn't seem to be listening to anyone but the GOP base. I listened in to his telephone town hall meeting yesterday, and he was underwhelming.

But I'm not convinced that we have until Nov 2008.  All the pieces are in place to finish dismantling the Constitution, declare martial law, suspend the election and finish the coup.

Is there anyone else in Palmdale who is like-minded? Sometimes I feel so very isolated living here.

Other subjects during the class will be; what is a "High Crime and Misdemeanor" and grounds for impeachment, how does impeachment work, and is impeachment practical and does it work? The DAA will also explain the options and alternatives to impeachment and possible next steps?

Following the presentation, the DAA will open the floor to a respectful discussion about the option and advisability of impeaching the President.

Please bring chapsticks and new men’s/women’s cotton underwear for the homeless shelter to the meeting. Also sign up for meal cooking and serving at the shelter.

Someone will make a motion to table the resolution (killing it) either Tuesday, Wednesday, or Thursday.  No chance, of course, that our Buck will stop blocking impeachment, but let's swamp his lines with calls for a "No" to tabling the resolution.

I'm sending the following email to Kucinich's campaign website (info@dennis4president.com); he's gathering emails supporting his resolution to impeach Cheney to present to Pelosi:

Dear Congressman Kucinich, I write in support of your resolution to begin impeachment proceedings against the vice-president, Richard Cheney. I urge the judiciary committee to schedule impeachment hearings immediately. There is no question that the vice-president has on multiple occasions subverted the national security interests of the United States in falsifying intelligence on Iraq weapons programs, lying to Congress and the American public about this and about false claims of ties between Iraq and al Q'aida. His attempts to similarly falsify intelligence, make public threats of force against Iran, and use back channels to make an "end run" around Congressional war powers are gravely impeachable offenses that endanger the security of the United States and set it on a course, once more, to violate treaty obligations and U.S. law.

CADEM Party Reaffirms Impeachment Resolution

Anything going on with Impeachment these days?

I've been on another planet for the last year. I'm quite interested in impeachment of Cheney and Bush. Is there anything I can do to help/participate? Please let me know.

Hi, and welcome back to the

Hi, and welcome back to the planet!

I think there IS interest here in CD 25 in doing something on impeachment, but it seems to be hard to sustain it and channel it into any practical activity.

A good and easy start might be just to get a small group together to stand at a busy intersection with signs with the simple message: IMPEACH, or maybe "Honk to Impeach!"

Does this sound like something to do? I think it's important to just get that word into the public consciousness while people are out shopping.

If anyone is interested in meeting up sometime/somewhere to do this, post your contact info, or if you'd rather send me a private email rather than post on the forum, fine (Leskenoi@yahoo.com). We can hash out a convenient time/place, and meet with signs.

Other ideas, of course, are welcome.

Impeachment Anniversary

On this day in 1868, the U.S. House of Representatives voted 126–47 to impeach President Andrew Johnson, who angered Radical Republicans in Congress with his lenient Reconstruction policies regarding the South after the Civil War.

Of course, the Republican Party then was very different from the GOP today!

If Andrew Johnson could be impeached, why not Bush and Cheney?
