Impeachment lobby - District CA01

We are in the organizational stage with our next meeting scheduled for December 29th in Willits. Will be planning for a visit to Mike Thompson's office in Ft. Bragg on Jan 3rd.

Results of meeting with Mike Thompson

On January 3, 2007, Heidi, Mike Thompson's aide in Fort Bragg, was very cordial to hear about a dozen members of the Mendocino County Impeachment Committee state their reasons to push for impeachment of both Bush and Cheney. Each committee member had a well justified reason to demand impeachment, yet each one was entirely different. I could think of just as many more reasons for impeachment, but one per person seemed quite enough.

I mentioned the neglect of the common good and the rape of our environment in order to enrich corporate interests. I reiterated the definition of fascism being when the government is in bed with corporations. I mentioned the criminality of our administration which promotes perpetual Orwellian wars in order to war profiteer. I demanded that Mike put impeachment back on the table.

Some folks mentioned their support for Congressman Thompson in his effort to initiate Iraq oversight. Some folks pledged their support for the Democrats, and some folks demanded impeachment NOW, like me. There was a poignant plea of the Desert Storm vet concerning all the people exposed to depleted uranium, both friends and enemies; her child now suffers the indirect effects of that exposure. Others were concerned about corruption, taking the administration to task for lying, violating the Constitution, and concern for bringing the troops home. Some mentioned setting a precedent for future leaders to remember to answer to the people. I can't remember every reason submitted, but Heidi wrote them all down.

Following the meeting with Mike Thompson's aide, Heidi, the Mendocino County Impeachment Committee stood on the main drag of Fort Bragg and demonstrated in the bone-chilling coastal drizzle with signs and banners calling for impeachment. Many vehicles honked their support.

One fancy blonde in an expensive SUV shouted, "Get a job!" I guess some folks despise those who actively participate in our democracy. I must admit that I feel similarly toward those who refuse to become educated about the issues and prefer to have decisions made for them rather than taking the responsibility to participate in molding their own destiny.

All in all, I think it was a very successful meeting and a good demonstration for our fledgling Mendocino County Impeachment Committee. I'm proud I was there.

Please join us..and bring others. We have been very active...our next meeting is 8/16, Thurs, Blanchard Room, Davis public library (14th St and F) at 7:00. On the agenda are plans to reach out to other congressional districts. Mary zbox@dcn.org

Mendocino County Impeachment Committee

In our meeting in Willits on Dec 29th we agreed to do the following in order to impeach President Bush:

1. Continue to gather signatures telling our representative, Mike Thompson (CA01) that we want him to vote to impeach President Bush.

2. Meet on Wed., Jan 3rd at 10:15 am in front of Howard Hospital in Willits for the trip to Thompson's office in Ft. Bragg for a day of demonstrations, gathering signatures on our petitions, meeting with his staff and the media to maximize publicity for putting impeachment back on the table. Please join us in Willits for the trip to Ft. Bragg or meet at Thompson's office at 430 N. Franklin St. in Ft. Bragg. Just north of E. Laurel St.

3. We will contact groups in Thompson's district such as Veterans For Peace and other progressive organizations to encourage them to gather signatures on petitions that tell Thompson to put impeachment back on the table. According to Congressman Thompson on a recent call-in radion show (KMUD) "...this talk of impeachment is just beating a dead horse." Let's show him the horse is not dead but wants Bush/Cheney impeached.

4. We will buy audio CDs and video DVDs of the speech by David Lindorff and Barbara Olshansky given in New Haven, Conn. June 24, 2006 titled "The Case for Impeachment." We will show the DVDs as often as possible to the public in order to inform them about impeachment. The audio CDs will be left with radio stations for their airing. The DVDs will also be given to local TV stations for a showing.

5. Our next meeting is scheduled for Friday, Jan 12th, 7 pm in Willits. Contact me at row1330@yahoo.com for more information.

Thanks for taking the time to read this. Hope to see you on the 3rd or the 12th.

Mendocino County Impeachment Committee meeting notes 1/12/07

Mendocino County Impeachment Committee
Notes from the meeting of 1/12/07

Present: Robin W., Bill, Pat, Fred, Robin S., & Lisa W.

Discussion of the 4 panelists in Healdsburg. They spoke openly about impeachment.
Handed out DVDs called, "Before You Enlist."
Passed around the Press Democrat with an article about the Healdsgurg event.
Robin S. mentioned that the fascist abusers would try to vilify their enemies.
Robin W. stated our religious beliefs have no place in our political struggle. She was referring to Carol Wollman's extensive use of scripture in the profuse emails we were getting from her Berkeley group. Although we may have different religious beliefs, we all agreed that the public statements from our group should not have religious stuff included.
Bill said that he unsubscribed from the Berkeley impeach group but continued to get Carol Wollman's personal letters. Her most recent was an excellent letter to Nancy Pelosi. Bill said he was going to email a copy to Robin S.

Petition signing opportunities:
• MLK Jr event at the United Methodist Church 6-8pm Sunday Jan. 14
• March from Mendocino to Caspar 10am Monday Jan. 1
Pat will be shuttling people along the route in the bus
• Peter Tracy's concert Jan. 20th
Glazer Center, Santa Rosa
www.petertracy.net
• The same 4 panelists: Dr. Peter Phillips, Elizabeth de la Vega, Phil Burk, & Sophie de Vries Jan. 24 @ Santa Rosa Democratic Club
• anytime in front of Safeway when no other solicitor is already there

You should ask permission of the store you are standing in front of as a matter of courtesy.

Bill has already gotten 500+ signatures. Bill says to take a manilla file folder and paste the "IMPEACH BUSH" bumper sticker to it near the fold. Then write below the bumper sticker "SIGN UP HERE!" Lay one side of the folder on the table weighted down with a stack of petitions on a clipboard. Have the other side hanging down over the edge of the table with your IMPEACH BUSH - SIGN UP HERE! sign. Carry a small foldable table with you to hold your clipboards and sign.

Bill plans to have available a pre-written letter to Mike Thompson and a pre-addressed envelope available for those who want to sign it and send it by snail mail. They put on their own stamp. Bill says he gets more signatures if he reaches out to the people with his voice. He need only say "Impeach" in a gentle non-offensive tone, and people who walked past will turn around and reconsider. It is an effective tool to get more signatures.

How should we deliver our signatures to Thompson?
The discussion ensued. Mail takes 6 mo. to arrive due to security scans for anthrax. Fax is the ideal way. It is better to fax them about 5/day to Thompson's DC office.

When faxing five, you fax the page with the letter first. Then follow with 4 more pages of just signatures. We all decided to send our own petitions in. Pat was going to connect Bill with the free fax opportunity. Bill said this Committee meeting was like going to a group therapy session with everybody venting at once.

Robin S. still didn't contact Wright Stuff Pizza about showing the movie.
No plan for the next meeting was made.

Update - Feb 17th, 2007

We continue to gather signatures on impeachment petitions with good coverage in Laytonville, Willits and Ukiah. Could use some help in all other areas of Thompson's District.

Contact me at row1330@yahoo.com for blank petitions or put together your own version.

Tentative plan is to deliver petitions to Thompson's Ft. Bragg office on Monday March 19th. Petitions could also be delivered to his Eureka, Napa, & Woodland (Davis) offices' on the same date. The March 19th date is open to change, I just picked that date since it will follow a week-end of peace rallies in DC and other areas. Since the petition, as currently written, says a copy will be delivered to the Chair, House Judiciary Committee don't forget to make a copy. John Conyers' office in Detroit told me if we mail them to his office in Michigan they will get into Conyers' hands.

We will continue to gather signatures after petitions are presented to Thompson. Hopefully a lot of publicity on that day for our event will bring fence sitters to our petition clipboards.

Impeachment Teach-in

Alerted by Moyers' program on impeachment (7/13), I have set up a community meeting in the Davis Public Library (14th St between "F" and Anderson) Wednesday

July 25, 6:30. I will show my tape of Moyers' program, present the articles of impeachment, the evidence so far, how impeachment proceeds, how we can all work towards that goal, as based on E Hotzman's "The Impeachment of George Bush." I will also have petitions to sign for Yolo and adjacent Congressional Districts to be delivered to our respective Representatives.

If you are within driving distance, please join us so that we can meet.
