In April, Congress will vote to give George W. Bush and Dick Cheney another $102 billion for Iraq - unless we finally persuade our Representatives to Just Say No.

One of the best ways to persuade a Representative is to hold a town hall meeting and fill the hall with people who care and are willing to speak passionately. (Another way is to turn out a crowd for a town hall that your Representative is already scheduled to attend.)

So we're asking YOU and the 500,000 members of Democrats.com to organize Iraq Town Halls in all 435 Congressional districts on any day in April.

Check for an Iraq Town Hall already being planned in your district: To do this, you must be registered and logged in on this website. Once you are, go to http://democrats.com/local and look for an Iraq Town Hall announcement below the "Congressional District" heading. If you see one, open it and post a comment below it offering to help, or contact the organizers in whatever way they have suggested (they may have posted a phone number or Email address).

Start organizing an Iraq Town Hall using the tools on this website: If there's nothing yet being planned in your district and you want to start talking with others about planning a possible town hall, or if you're ready to post an announcement of an Iraq Town Hall, please Email us at: iraqtownhall@democrats.com We will walk you through the steps involved. To get started on your own (it's really not that hard) CLICK HERE.

For tips on how to make your Iraq Town Hall a success, READ MORE.

Getting Organized:

Ask at least one reliable friend to help you organize this event.

Ask local organizations to take part.

Reserve a convenient hall or auditorium.

You should hold your event with or without your Representative, so you can call and ask about their availability before or after you pick a date. Weekends are the most likely times for them to be available. We recommend calling the District Office (not DC office) of your Representative (you can find the # here) and ask for the scheduler. If your Representative won't give you a date promptly, pick one yourself - and leave an empty seat on the stage for your Representative.

Invite key speakers. A number of organizations are making speakers available for these Iraq Town Halls. Here is a list.

Reach out to community to participate: here are some outreach ideas.

Make a 1-page flyer (or use this one) and post it in busy locations (coffee shops, supermarkets, libraries, post offices, etc.)

Post your event on every community calendar you can think of (internet, radio, newspaper, etc).

Email and/or call local reporters (TV, radio, newspaper, blogs) to personally invite them to attend.

An Agenda for Your Event:

Your agenda will depend on whether your Representative attends, what key speakers attend, what groups are involved, etc. Here are some ideas:

Be aware of how your Representative has voted in the past on funding the occupation.

Be aware of how much total money the Iraq Occupation is costing: http://3trillion.org

Be aware of exactly what you can ask Representatives and Senators to do.

Come early to set up and bring all the items you need.

Test the sound system to make sure it works.

Bring video cameras to record the event for Youtube.

Set up tables in the back for literature from your allies.

Set up a table and chairs on the stage with a readable sign for each speaker, including your Representative - whether (s)he attends or not.

On the podium, tape a sign with your Representative's name and DC phone number in large letters so everyone can add them to their cellphone.

Set up a card table at the door with several clipboards for sign-in sheets. Ask for name, zip, email, and cellphone for texting.

Bring a cash box for contributions.

Greet reporters at the door, thank them for coming, and invite them to sit in the front and interview the speakers.

After the speeches, ask everyone to call their Representative and leave a message with their name and address and a simple demand: vote NO on $102 billion more for Iraq.

Form a committee to keep up the pressure on your Representative through grassroots events like honkathons, ironing-board letter-writing, anti-war film showings, tables at community events, etc.

Make a plan to pass local resolutions in support of ending current wars, not starting new ones, impeachment, and indictment.

Show videos of the Winter Soldier testimony available at http://ivaw.org

Display and discuss the financial cost to your district of the occupation of Iraq. Find figures at http://costofwar.com and multiply by 6 to approximate the full cost as calculated by Joseph Stiglitz and Linda Bilmes in "The Three Trillion Dollar War."

a new strategy for Iraq

The Iraqis should hire Halliburton, Blackwater and KBR directly for their security and training needs. 50% of the current boots on the ground are contractors. American government officials can continue to play an advisory role, in conjunction with NATO countries, in helping the Iraqis to establish a democratic government.

In this proposed strategy, a board of American energy companies could take over the management of the Iraq oil assets, with KBR, Halliburton, Blackwater et al providing security. Currently, the oil pipelines are very vulnerable to sabotage, theft and mismanagement. Every citizen of Iraq should be considered a shareholder in the oil revenues.

The energy companies should manage this resource until the Iraqi government is formed with 3 parties representing all three factions of the population. There should be proportional representation between all three factions. Neighborhoods should be policed by their own ethnic groups. The oil revenues should be used to pay for contractor security and training services, oil pipeline management and a portion should be used to pay the debt that America has accumulated in pursuing the Iraq liberation with the remaining profits held in trust for distribution to the representatives of Iraqi citizens.

No more American taxpayer money, no more voluntary military forces in Iraq.

The contractors should be subject to Iraqi law during their service. If there are no existing laws, perhaps the U.S. military code of justice can be substituted in the interim and referred to in the contracts of personnel from these corporations. This will accomplish the goals outlined by the Bush administration and Republicans who support the war effort without inequitably draining the American military and U.S. taxpayer funds.

So, in other words you would

So, in other words you would continue American involvement in a foreign Civil War, and promote the killing of innocent women and children? You would have the fox (Halliburton) guarding the henhouse (Iraq)?

Sorry, but yours is one of the most absurd proposals about ending the war against the Iraqi people that I've seen. Your solution only changes the titles of those killing innocent people, and the tax payers would still fund the war through "no-bid contracts."

Are we headed towards this:

http://www.veoh.com/videos/v62581595gyHBfwk

---------------

In case you don't want to go through the episode I'll summarize:

Two planets are at War.

Kirk can't figure out where the War is being waged.

Soon it is discovered that the War is fought via computer war games.

When an "attack" is finished the computers tally how many folks must report to be executed.

---------------

First we burn through soldiers trapped in Stop Loss.

Now we move toward mercenaries?

It getting easier and easier for politicians to not do their jobs.

This aint no Star Trek Episode Moron!

This is real, and real people are getting killed every day. Most of them killed by their own neighbors. This isn't going to end the way the Vietnam war ended either. When our country pulled out of Vietnam the communist won their victory, took over the country and that was nearly the end of it. Aside from the bastards keeping and abusing many of our POW (the means Prisoner Of War for you young ones) the agression stopped there. BTW. John McCain was one of those POW's.

It isn't going to happen that way if we simply pull out of Iraq today. We will loose more than a victory. We will tell those rag head (aka islamic extremist) bastards that we can't stomach chasing them down anymore, and it's ok to begin plotting to blow up our US buildings again and kill more of our innocent citizens.

We didn't finish the job in the early 1990's and now we've paid the ultimate price. More than 5,000 americans lost their lives in one day, and that can easily happen again if we let those rag heads continue to push us around.

Henry

Dude! Wrong country!

I know you're a republican, and therefore you're somewhat challenged but don't you think that it would have been more effective if we had not attacked the entirely incorrect country? Are you SURE this isn't an episode of Star Trek? It would appear that someone inadvertently beamed you up from the planet CaCa4Brains.

Usama bin Forgotten

Man without balls: reddogvictory...

...and brains as well, as lootie points out.

But to my first point:

  • WHY ARE YOU NOT IN IRAQ?
  • WHY HAVE MILLIONS OF CONSERVATIVE "MEN" FORCED THE TROOPS INTO STOP LOSS BY NOT ENLISTING?
  • WHY DO THOSE SAME "MEN" LIVE OFF THE WELFARE AFFORDED BY OUR TROOPS BEING PAID BELOW MARKET WAGES? ALL BECAUSE RUSH AND OTHER ASSBOILS LIKE YOURSELF, REFUSE TO PAY THE TAXES NEEDED TO PAY THE TROOPS DECENTLY?
  • ETC.

And if you'll re-read the posts above you'll see my response was to a poster attempting to move this discussion to the USA using mercenaries! THAT is surreal and I pointed it out. Get it?

Now can you and your effeminate brain dead compatriots get the fuck out of our way so the USA can actually go after those who attacked us on 911! Would it be too much to ask your fellow Republican greed misters to stop chasing dollars and let us turn our attention to killing our enemies?

Too much to ask that a thoroughly broken man, John McCain, be asked to step aside and let vital folks ATTACK our enemies rather than coddle corporate and political interests?

=-( I think someone took

our republican and did something heinous to him.

Usama bin Forgotten

a ha.

Oh well.

Hey, every time I glance at that guy's post I notice a new insanity. Did the McSame Republican state: we were attacked on 911 because we did not destroy Iraq DECADES ago?

Its never about Bin Laden with these Bush ass kissers.

Finnland and 911

The Republican above (Henry) writes:

"We didn't finish the job in the early 1990's and now we've paid the ultimate price. More than 5,000 americans lost their lives in one day, and that can easily happen again if we let those rag heads continue to push us around."

There are no words...

(Perhaps I should have titled this post, Iraq and 911, but those two don't go together any better).

"ragheads" a point on racism:

You can desire to smash an enemies skull in, and not broaden the hatred to include non enemies.

Does one kick the dog when one's neighbor gets on one's nerves?

If so, that is a:

Help Spread the Word to Support Town Halls- Support Digg Article

Hello all,
I'm so happy this is being organized. Unfortunately, I am not in good enough health to help with the actual organizing right now, but I have posted this on digg.com, where there are a good number of activists, and newly motivated voters that could get involved in the organizing and/or spread the word and boost attendance.

Please take a few minutes to go to
http://digg.com/2008_us_elections/Town_Halls_Against_Iraq_War_Being_Orga...

and digg, to help spread the word! MoveOn of course is already starting it's great email campaign for this - that's how I heard about it:) I think this will help, too.
Thanks again for putting this effort together! It's a wonderful idea!

Hey Mike

Nice chatting and glad you're on your way with the FL - Pineallas County Iraq Town Hall. Thanks for your efforts and actions! Best, ~Chip :)

carte blanche

In the immortal words of Inigo Montoya, "I do not think that means what you think it means."

a blank check is when

you give CheneyBush the pile of cash to hand out to their cronies

a non-blank check is when you give them the money along with a little note that says "please don't hurt anybody. thank you."

I'm a Democrat and new to this website.

I am very impressed with Borack Obama. I think he is a special person . I believe he is more of a threat to the establishment than Hillary, which makes me worried about Diebold electrinic vothing machines. It's not who votes that counts, its who counts the votes.

This subject, voting machines, should be in the top subjects of every Hall Meeting etc.

Iraq Town Hall in PA12 Congressional District

I am willing to do whatever I can to help put together an Iraq Town Hall in PA12 Congressional District. I am the organizer of 3 Rivers Impeach Bush and Cheney Meetup and I will take this to my group. Please email me at kabiondi@yahoo.com.

Effective Town Hall Meetings

In order to accomplish any peace strategy, you MUST IMPEACH BUSH AND CHENEY
FIRST! Only by holding those criminals in the White House accountable for
their lawless abuses of power and the Constitution, can they be stopped.
Impeachment is the only tool powerful enough to do this. It is never too
late to protect and defend the Constitution and to hold criminals
accountable! IMPEACHMENT NOW! Let's make these Town Halls for IMPEACHMENT
FOR PEACE!

Impeach Bush and Cheney NOW

Defense of the Constitution Knows No Party

The Bush administration has illegally seized and imprisoned Americans without benefit of their trial by jury, has spied on Americans without warrant in violation of the Fourth Amendment of the Constitution, has lied America into a disastrous war, and has betrayed an American intelligence officer, who was working on weapons of mass destruction networks, to our enemies (Valerie Plame.)

Impeachment hearings against Vice President Dick Cheney are now a distinct possibility, thanks to a recent outpouring of public support for impeachment by Americans across the political spectrum. Your calls and faxes to House Judiciary Committee members are needed to keep up the pressure.

Leave a message for your Congressman, to demand he obey his oath to "defend the Constitution of the United States against all enemies, foreign and domestic." Act now to restore your rights and the rule of law bequeathed to us by our Founding Fathers, which brave men have died defending throughout our history.

Call the House Judiciary Committee

202-225-3951
and demand that Impeachment hearings begin ASAP!

*What Happened to Make This All Possible?

On November 6, 2007, Rep. Dennis Kucinich brought H.Res.799, for the impeachment of Cheney, to the House Floor for debate. It was broadcast on CSPAN. A sudden outpouring of public support for impeachment forced lawmakers to keep the resolution alive. Democrats, most of whom currently resist demands for impeachment, were unwilling to kill the bill with the public watching. Republicans and some Democrats, mindful of impeachment sentiment, voted to debate the bill, but failed. At the end of the day, Americans of both parties had made it clear whose "table" this is, and that they want to see impeachment on it.

Senate Bill 1959

Violent Radicalization and Homegrown Terrorism Prevention Act, loosely worded in a way that allows subjective interpretation of what's perceived as dissident acts, provides for those in power to criminalize anyone considered to be potentially effective in galvanizing opposition that could prove disruptive or destabilizing to the status quo. Section 899A3 defines Homegrown Terrorism as a term meaning "the use, planned use or threatened use of force OR violence by a group or individual born, raised, or based and operating primarily within the U.S. to intimidate or coerce the U.S. gov't, the civilian population of the U.S., or any segment thereof, in furtherance of political or social objectives.

This bill passed in the House 10/23/07 by roll call vote. The vote was held under a suspension of the rules to cut debate short and pass the bill, needing a two-thirds majority. The totals were 404 Ayes, 6 Nays, 22 Present/Not Voting.

It is extremely important that all familiarize & act to defeat this dangerous bill. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZIOSAkX4pfY(see 1 and 2)Contact your senators, spread the word. This one's got some big teeth, folks.

[Subject] StateDemocracy.org Equips You for the 2008 Election

Dear Citizen:
Are you ready yet for the November 4th Elections? How about your friends, family, and neighbors?
More Americans are expected to vote this year than ever before in history, so don’t be left out! Be sure to ask everyone you know the following questions:
 Are you registered to vote? If you moved recently, have you updated your voter registration?
 Did you apply for an Absentee Ballot? Do you know your state may not require any reason?
 Can you find your local Polling Place? Do you know it may have changed from last time?
The answers to these questions -- and all your voting needs -- can be found at www.StateDemocracy.org -- the FREE 1-Stop citizen empowerment portal that Delivers Democracy to your Desktop! StateDemocracy is among the Internet’s first (since 2001) and most encompassing civic empowerment tools.
In order to boost voter participation this year, StateDemocracy.org is offering FREE widgets for all 50 states. You can simply download and embed these widgets into your own website so your visitors can register to vote, get an absentee ballot or find their local polling place.
Lobby Congress Via StateDemocracy
StateDemocracy.org also equips you to maintain an active dialog with your state and federal lawmakers once they are elected. And RIGHT NOW is an especially opportune time to contact your U.S. Senators and House Member, as Congress takes up major legislation on such issues as offshore oil drilling, another economic stimulus package and all federal appropriations bills over the next few weeks.
As you lobby your elected officials, remember that lawmakers view your constituent input as reflective of scores of other citizens who felt similarly, but didn’t have (or take) the time to share their opinions.
LobbyDelegates.com Further Empowered Grassroots Voices
Over the past 5 months, you may have visited www.LobbyDelegates.com, along with 26,000 other visitors. This latest public interest portal by the StateDemocracy Foundation remained the only online tool enabling rank-and-file Democrats to lobby all 800+ Super Delegates on which candidate to back for the party’s Presidential nomination.
