Democrats Got Lucky By Not Choosing John Edwards

Today John Edwards admitted he had an affair in 2006 with 44-year old Rielle Hunter.

Some will judge him harshly for it, some will not. All I can say is Democrats sure got lucky by not choosing him as our nominee this year - because if we had, the campaign would be over and John McCain would be choosing his Oval Office furniture.

And hopefully Barack Obama isn't lying when he says Michelle keeps him in line.

But while everyone obsesses over Edwards' past affair, what about John McCain's past affair - his affair with Cindy Lou Hensley, the pretty young heiress of one of the largest Budweiser distributors?

Of course McCain dumped his disfigured first wife for Cindy, and used her money to rise through the ranks of Republican politics - even as he showed his true feelings by calling her a c**t in front of 3 reporters.

Even Ronald and Nancy Reagan were shocked when McCain ran off with Cindy, yet the Corporate Media never mentions it. "Liberal media" my ass.

Of course there was one moment when the "liberal media" (a.k.a. the New York Times) suggested McCain was sleeping with a lobbyist - literally, not just figuratively. Republicans went ballistic, McCain denied the suggestion, and no one has ever raised the issue again. As Digby writes,

considering how everyone is excusing flogging this Edwards story on the basis of the fact that he lied to the press, I'm not sure it's in the country's best interest not to ask McCain about this again and talk to the women herself. What if it comes out that it was true after he's president? (That's one of the lines they keep trotting out about why it's so important to crucify Edwards.)

And while I'm on the topic of the media, let me bring up one of my pet peeves: what right does anyone in the media have to comment on some politician's affair without first disclosing whether or not they have ever had an affair?

All throughout Monicagate, it made me sick that at least half the pundits who were attacking Bill Clinton themselves had affairs, but they never had to disclose them.

Taking a cue from Bill Maher, I am announcing a new Rule: anyone in the media who criticizes a politician for having an affair must fully disclose how many affairs (s)he had.

Update 1: As always, Digby says it better:

Oh, and all the celebrity gasbags deserve to have all of their own private peccadilloes exposed to the world. They have helped create this absurd political test and they are the last people who could withstand the same scrutiny. These powerful people passing judgment on politicians for things they all do themselves is what makes the Village such phony provincial hellhole.

Heartsick

I haven't been this heartsick in about three years - and yes, I'm talking about then. I think I need to crawl in a hole and pull it in with me. Sometimes I am so ashamed of democratic leadership.

Republicans just took a knife and bludgeoned Elizabeth Edwards with it. John Edwards wasn't even running for anything. There was no need to destroy someone with a terminal illness.

My question is: Will democratic leaders sit idly by and allow it again? I don't think I can belong to a party that has no effective retaliatory response when a woman with stage 4 cancer is thrown under the bus. It makes us look like wimps.

Maybe we are.

Agree Lootie...not enough going on with the Olympics and all the

rest. EEdwards has quite enough on her plate...she doesn't need this.

The greatest derangement of the mind is to believe in something because one wishes it to be so.

And it's going to happen

again and again and again. Unless someone stands up and gives just as good as he gets.

I'm waiting to see what happens with this. I'm waiting to see if leadership can take care of its own. If it can't, it can't take care of the country.

Usama bin Forgotten

Lootie, our leadership is hardly capable of taking care of ...

themselves as you clearly know. For eight long bitter years, they have struggled to enrich themselves(wealth, status, power)at the expense of the country and her people.

This search for change will accomplish just more of the same I fear.

What is it about politcians

What is it about politcians that they think THEY can carry on the double life and not get caught - despite the many examples of those who felt the same but were exposed time and again - to much grief, humiliation, and political fall-out?
Why do they sabotage themselves this way?
His foolishness and hubris astounds and disappoints me.
But we can't let the MSM make this about the Democratic Party.
JE is not the nominee. He is not the choice for VP,(anymore that is, and I find it hard to believe that he seriously was as some people in the Democratic Party had to know his dirty litle secret).
Now he has to make it right with his family.
But we have an election to win in November and imo, we need to focus on that.

My Heart goes out to the Edwards family

But I still think John Edwards should be included in the Obama administration in some capacity. Attorney General?

AG= good idea

That sounds like a good idea, Watchmen. When I first heard about Edwards' affair, I wondered why it was such a big deal. Yes he shouldn't have done it, but really, I don't see how it is any of my business. It disgusted me to see it all over the news as if was the most important story of the week or something. With everything going on in our country and the world, _this_ is what they deemed important? Disgusting!
